DIY Teacup Bird Feeder for Mother’s Day – Sweet, Sustainable, and Kid-Made
Apr 25, 2025There’s something special about a handmade gift—especially one that invites a little nature magic into your everyday. This year, my dayhome crew made these adorable teacup bird feeders for Mother’s Day using thrifted finds, birdseed, and a whole lot of love. 💕 It’s easy, budget-friendly, and gives kids the joy of gifting something they truly made themselves.
And to make it even more meaningful (and easy to pull together), I’ve created a free printable Mother’s Day card that pairs perfectly with this gift.
It’s a simple way to turn this activity into something families will truly keep.

🫖 Why We Love This Gift Idea
-
🌿 Sustainable – We upcycled thrift store teacups and filled them with birdseed instead of plastic trinkets.
-
🐦 Connects Kids with Nature – Moms and littles can watch birds enjoy their gift right outside their window.
-
🎨 Hands-on Fun – Kids get to pour, mix, and create—a full sensory experience.
-
💌 Meaningful – It’s beautiful, useful, and personal.
And the best part? This doesn’t need to be overcomplicated to be meaningful.
I often remind myself (and other educators) that we don’t have to celebrate every holiday in big, Pinterest-perfect ways to make it special:

How to Make a Teacup Bird Feeder
-
Prepare the gelatin
In a mixing bowl, prepare one packet of unflavored gelatin according to package directions. Usually, this means combining it with hot water and then cool water to help it set properly. -
Add the birdseed
Pour in two cups of birdseed. Depending on the gelatin packet size, you may need to adjust the amount slightly. You're aiming for a thick, sticky consistency. -
Mix it well
Stir until the seed is fully coated. It should resemble oatmeal. If it’s too watery, sprinkle in more seed a little at a time.
-
Spoon it into the teacups
Fill each teacup with the mixture, pressing it down gently. Place the cups on a tray and refrigerate them for a few hours to let the gelatin fully set. -
Add ribbon for hanging
Once firm, remove the cups from the fridge and tie a ribbon or twine securely around the handle. Knot it into a bow, and leave enough length to hang it from a tree branch or shepherd's hook.
Don’t Forget the Card!
To make this gift even more special, I’ve designed a free printable card that kids can personalize with drawings or a special note.
