๐ Easy Earth Day Activities for Preschoolers (Simple, Low-Prep Ideas That Actually Work)
Apr 02, 2026
I keep seeing the same thing this time of year…
“I want to do something for Earth Day…
but I don’t want it to be complicated or take hours to prep.”
So here’s what I actually do in my dayhome ๐
Simple, hands-on Earth Day activities using materials I already have—
that keep children engaged, exploring, and learning through play.
๐ฑ Why Keep Earth Day Activities Simple?
In early learning, Earth Day doesn’t need to be:
- perfectly themed
- craft-heavy
- or time-consuming
It can look like:
- sensory play
- process art
- open-ended exploration
- meaningful conversations
๐ Simple play often leads to deeper learning.
๐ง Activity 1: Blue + Green Water Play (Earth-Inspired Sensory Bin)

This was one of the biggest hits in my dayhome.
I set up two bins:
- blue metallic water
- green metallic water
With:
- small pouring cups
- containers
- space for mixing and exploring
The children immediately started:
- pouring
- mixing
- watching colors change
- using their hands to explore
It turned into a full sensory + science experience without any complicated setup.
๐ก What children are learning:
- cause and effect
- color mixing
- fine motor skills
- sensory regulation
๐ If you want the exact recipe for this metallic water, it’s included inside my

๐จ Activity 2: Earth-Inspired Process Art

For this activity, I kept things very open-ended.
I offered:
- paint
- paint sticks
- markers
- crayons
All in blue and green tones.
No instructions. No expectations.
Just an invitation to create.
Once the children were finished, I cut their artwork into circles to resemble Earth ๐
And honestly… they turned out beautiful.

๐ก What children are learning:
- creative expression
- color exploration
- fine motor development
- confidence in their ideas
๐ This is something I talk about often—
it’s not about the final product, it’s about the process.

โป๏ธ Activity 3: Recycling Sorting Play
This is another simple activity we love when talking about Earth Day and caring for our environment.
We use a recycling sorting toy with:
- small bins
- different items to sort
The children naturally start:
- sorting
- asking questions
- making real-life connections
๐ก What children are learning:
- early environmental awareness
- sorting and categorizing
- problem-solving
- real-world understanding
It opens the door to conversations like:
- “Where does this go?”
- “Can we recycle this?”
- “What happens to our garbage?”
๐ This is a toy we come back to often during Earth Day conversations and throughout the year:

๐งบ How to Extend This Into a Sensory Bin
You can also bring recycling learning into sensory play.
When I set up a bin, I’ll add:
- a base (rice, popcorn, etc.)
- loose parts
- scoops and containers
And then include mini recycling bins for sorting.
These make such a difference because they:
- give children a clear purpose
- introduce real-world systems
- encourage sorting and problem-solving
๐ These are similar to the ones we use:
Mini Recycling Cans for Sorting
The play naturally evolves into:
- sorting by type or color
- pretend clean-up play
- conversations about recycling
๐ก You don’t need to buy anything new to do this—
containers from around your home work just as well.
๐ฟ You Don’t Need to “Do More” for Earth Day
This is your reminder:
You don’t need:
- elaborate crafts
- themed activities every day
- hours of prep
You just need:
- simple materials
- space to explore
- and a willingness to follow the child
๐ I share more about this approach here:
You Don’t Have to Celebrate Every Holiday
And if you’re looking to bring in some gentle, meaningful conversations around Earth Day, books are such a simple way to do that.
๐ I put together a list of 10 green-themed books for kids that are perfect for this time of year:

They’re an easy way to extend your activities without adding any extra prep.

๐ฌ Final Thought
Earth Day in early learning doesn’t need to be complicated to be meaningful.
Sometimes it looks like:
- blue water
- green paint
- and children fully engaged in play
…and that’s more than enough ๐
